The 3 Best Books I Know For Teaching Yourself to Draw

Sad but true.  And in a few cases, they were worse than useless, either because the information in them was just plain wrong, or because they directed me down unproductive paths and wasted my time with fripperies instead of concentrating on drawing fundamentals.
Still, in all the books I’ve come across there is a very short list of real gems that I’ve found have really helped me in my bid to grow artistically and develop my drawing skills.
The books on this list are outrageously useful, in my opinion. I recommend them without reserve. They account for a very small percentage of all the art books I have, but they’re the only ones I really needed to buy.
If you’re teaching yourself to draw, I recommend you get these three books and work with them constantly and consistently for two years. If you put the effort in, I think you’ll be amazed at how far you can develop your drawing skills.

1. The Practice and Science of Drawing – Harold Speed

2. The Bargue book

3. Composition – Arthur Wesley Dow

Blind sketching

My sketch book is always with me, I love drawing, the problem is that I'm a shy drawer. The idea of someone noticing me drawing him/her makes me extremely uncomfortable. That's when I find blind sketching helpful. Blind sketching is a very simple technique that helps me loosen my drawing line and gives me an interesting starting point for character design. It forces me to go out of my "comfort zone" and improve my style.
The principle is very simple. The idea is to not look  (or at least, look less) at the drawing paper while sketching quickly an object that's being observed.  Very often it gives nothing, just a pile of gibberish lines. But sometimes it can catch the essence of a posture or a movement in a very unique way. The unpredictable distortion that's created as a result of the process can be a good start for designing or illustrating characters.

About Old Paintings

Your walls are bland, and the oldest piece of art you own was probably created a few years ago, since you bought it last spring while you were picking up odds and ends at a big box store. But now, you do not have to brave a gallery filled with collectors or fight a wealthy gallery owner to try to obtain an old painting. You can just browse thousands of options online. Thanks to the diverse nature of artists, it is easy to find a painting from years gone that reflects any one of a number of niches. For a whimsical look, try an old oil painting. Since the art of oil painting dates back to at least the 15th century, an older painting in this style can definitely add a touch of the stately home to your rented apartment that still has avocado-colored appliances from the 1970s. Often, these paintings feature wood paneling, which means you can also incorporate them into a home that has a classical look with ease. Aiming for a particularly old painting is a great way to surprise an antiques lover with a gift. If oil painting does not appeal to you, an old framed painting incorporating any technique is a beautiful alternative. You can find anything from an expressionist painting in a gilt frame to an early Americana work in an old wooden frame from eBay’s most reliable sellers, who will send your painting carefully packaged so it arrives in ideal condition.

three type painting

Approximately four thousand families will lose someone precious to drowning this year.  Every drowning circumstance can be different, but the prevention is always the same.
  1. Learn how to swim.
  2. Set up barriers around water hazards.
  3. Provide uninterrupted visual supervision of children in and around water.
  4. Learn CPR.
Below is an explanation of the three types of drowning scenarios.
1.  WET DROWNING
Cause
  • Caused by four or more ounces of water in the lungs.  The water in the lungs prevents oxygen from getting to the bloodstream and eventually the heart stops.
Symptoms
  • Someone who has spent too much time underwater
    • Victim may be quietly reaching for a wall
    • Victim may be quietly bobbing up and down at the surface of the water.
    • Victim may be lying still on the bottom.
Loss of Consciousness
  • Three minutes or less

Response
  • Initiate CPR
  • Call 911
2.  DRY DROWNING (occurs in less than 10% of drowning victims)
Cause
  • Caused by larynx (voice box) spasms, which will shut off the airway to the lungs.  The prevention of air getting to the lungs results in lack of oxygen in the bloodstream, which will eventually cause the heart to stop.
  • Call 911

3.  DELAYED DROWNING (Secondary Drowning)
Cause
  • Caused by less than four ounces of water in the lungs.  The body reacts to this small amount of water in the lungs by creating even more fluids in the lungs, which prevents oxygen from getting to the bloodstream and eventually the heart stops.
Symptoms
  • immediate coughing and shortness of breath
  • tiredness
  • unusual behavior
  • confused speech or behavior
  • loss of bowels and urine control
  • sleepiness
Loss of Consciousness
  • Can be delayed for up to 72 hours.
Response
  • Immediately transport victim (or suspected victim) to the nearest emergency room.
